Filipino-American baritone David Castillo is a singer, actor, and entrepreneur known for delivering “impassioned” (LA Times) performances “beautifully sung and confidently acted” (Opera News). He is a performer with a vast repertoire of music ranging from the baroque period to world premieres composed for his voice.
His versatile and important 15|16 season brings three World Premieres, creating the roles of Goethe in Andriessen’sTheatre of the World in his debut with Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the role of Jameson in HOPSCOTCH with The Industry and and as the Baritone Soloist in infinite self by Jeffrey Parola with the USC Fischer Museum. He also makes his European debut performing Winterreise with Francois Chouchan at the Mairie du Troisieme Arrondissement in Paris, his Off-Broadway and New York Debut reprising the role of Atzuko in ¡Figaro! (90210), the role of Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd with Fresno Grand Opera and Townsend Opera, Jesus in Bach’s St. John Passion with the Pasadena Master Chorale, Baritone Soloist in Bach Cantata 147 at New Orleans’ historic St. Louis Cathedral, Baritone Soloist in Bach Cantata 73 at the Long Beach Bach Festival with the Horizon Chamber Choir, and his return to Le Salon de Musiques at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
The New Orleans native performed World Premieres for the Los Angeles Opera as Atzuko in ¡Figaro! (90210) and for the Los Angeles Master Chorale as King David in Kirchner’s Songs of Ascent, West Coast Premieres as Britten’s Owen Wingrave and as Ferdinand in Hoiby’s The Tempest; and many leading characters such as Oreste in Iphigénie en Tauride, Le Mari in Les Mamelles de Tirésias; Papageno in The Magic Flute; Dr. Malatesta in Don Pasquale; Belcore in The Elixir of Love; Sid in Albert Herring; Des Grieux in Massenet’s Le portrait de Manon; Il Barone di Trombonok in Il Viaggio a Reims. His Concert and Recital performances include Schubert’s Winterreise, Brahm’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Fauré Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Vaughan William’s Five Mystical Songs.
David has been honored as the 2010 Grand Prize Winner of the Steward Brady Competition, a 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Finalist, a 2010 National Finalist in Classical Singer’s University Competition, the 2013 Runner-up and 2012 Encouragement Award Recipient from the Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition, and a multiple Opera Buffs, Inc. Grant Recipient. He received his Master of Music from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music under Rod Gilfry and his Bachelor of Music from Loyola University New Orleans under the late Philip Frohnmayer. He has trained at Killian’s Commercial Workshop, Aspen Opera Theatre Center, Green Mountain Opera Festival, Thriving Creating Artists, and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. He is a member of VOX, a vocal quartet recently featured on America’s Got Talent.
